In the spirit of celebrating our beautiful country, we wanted to share some insights into the history of the Lockyer Valley, as well as some inspo on how to spend your long weekend with us.
Acknowledgment of Country
Murphys Creek Escape acknowledges the Yuggera and Ugarapul people as the Traditional Custodians of the Lockyer Valley region. We pay our respects to their Elders, past and present, and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders who call this area home.
As you join us in this beautiful place, we invite you to reflect on the deep history of the land and the stories it holds.
Meet the traditional custodians of the Lockyer Valley
The Lockyer Valley holds a rich history, deeply rooted in the connection of the Yuggera and Ugarapul people to the land.
The Yuggera people hold the sand goanna as their totem spirit animal, while the Ugarapul people are connected to the frog and share a special relationship with the Bremer River.
One prominent figure in the region’s history was Old Moppy, a leader, guide and resistance fighter born in the late 1780s. Known for his bravery and strength, Old Moppy united diverse Aboriginal groups to protect their land and traditions, leaving a legacy of resilience and unity.
When you visit, you’re walking on land with stories that span thousands of years; stories of connection, respect and reverence for nature. It’s a huge part of the reason we’re so passionate about our area, and why we love fostering a joy for the land and its native flora and fauna among our camping guests.
Classic Aussie activities in nature: Let’s get long weekend ready!
Now we’re in the spirit of celebrating our land and history, we reckon it’s time to get amongst it – in the heart of the bush, of course. Get ready to soak in the sun, embrace the outdoors and dive into some quintessential Aussie fun to finish off the school holidays with a bang:
- Cool off with a swim and creek explore
Take a refreshing dip in Murphys Creek or our serene Eco Billabong Pool. Perfect for beating the summer heat and keeping the kids entertained for hours.
- Throw a backyard BBQ (bush style)
Fire up the grill at your campsite and cook up some sausages, burgers, or veggie skewers. Nothing says “holiday vibes” like sharing a meal in the great outdoors.
- Play a friendly game of cricket
A long weekend cricket match is a no-brainer, especially when you’re in the great outdoors with plenty of space to play. Pack a cricket set and turn your campground into a pitch for a friendly match. Or, if cricket’s not really your thing, bring a frisbee, soccer ball or board games.
- Set up a scavenger hunt and other kid-friendly games
Organise a bush scavenger hunt or even a mini orienteering route in your immediate campsite. There are plenty of natural nooks for hiding treasures and clues. Set up water games (no equipment needed for things like Marco Polo) to cool down and keep the little ones smiling. The bush is the perfect playground for creativity and adventure.
- Book passes to a Native Oz Bush Foods Tour
Get back to the roots of the land with an educational and delicious Native Oz Bush Foods Tour. Located just over half an hour’s drive from us, these popular tours feature Australian indigenous experiences like smoking ceremony and acknowledgement to country. You’ll also be treated to a tour around the gardens and orchards with the owners of the land, as well as a spread of delicious traditional foods for morning tea or lunch.
Check tour availability and find out more about Native Oz here.
- Spend your evenings under the stars
When the sun sets on Murphys Creek Escape, the magic continues. Bring the family together around a campfire for an evening of storytelling, stargazing and food cooked over the fire (or at the communal on-site kitchen!). Share laughs, make memories, and enjoy the rare treat of no screens and no interruptions.
A glimpse into the region’s native flora and fauna
The Lockyer Valley is a living, breathing showcase of Australia’s natural beauty. With over 300 species of birds, it’s a birdwatcher’s paradise, so keep an eye out for king parrots, kookaburras and even wedge-tailed eagles when you visit.
On land, you might spot wallabies grazing in the early morning light, koalas nestled in the treetops, or even an echidna shuffling through the underbrush. At night, micro bats, bandicoots and possums bring the bush to life under the stars.
