A dog leash
It’s advisable not to use the regular leash you normally use at home while taking your dog for a walk as it may not be as effective. This is because while you are outdoors, you will need a leash that is strong enough almost indestructible while camping and hiking. The amount of activity that you and your dog will be doing not to mention the excitement will need a strong leash. Apart from sturdiness, the other feature that you should keep in mind is that it should be adjustable as this will give you the freedom to either keep your dog next to you or allow him/her to wander off a bit.
There are also hands-free leashes available that allow you to attach it around your waist while you set your camping area or on a table to keep your dog nearby. You could also attach the leash to your backpack as you hike. Lastly, make sure your leash comes with a clip that is good for the safety and security of you, your dog and other campers while ensuring that comfort isnβt sacrificed.
First Aid Kit
This is such an essential kit to carry around while camping or hiking not only for yourself but also for your dog. One always feels a little bit more confident and sure with themselves when you are prepared for anything. Dogs and any other animal in general love to be outdoors and they get too excited to the point where they are all over the place making it easy for them to hurt themselves. A human kit may have what you need to attend to your dog in case they injure themselves but there is some pet specific equipment that you need to have with you such as wound care ointments, self adhering bandages that wonβt stick on its fur, splinter remover etc. Therefore, you can either purchase an entire pet specific kit or add the equipment to your kit.
Biodegradable poop bags
Even the outdoors has its own set of rules. It’s common decency to pick up your dog’s poop and you can easily do this using biodegradable poop bags. You are not only being a good camper but also you are cautious of your surroundings. These bags are normally made from plant material and vegetable oils hence they will break down completely and you wonβt be littering.
Dog food and a bowl
While sorting out your food, donβt forget your dog’s as well. Depending on your dogβs age and the level of activities you will be enjoying during the trip, your dogβs nutrition is important. You can bring along some freeze dried and dehydrated dog food which is fast and easy to prepare. Bring along also a collapsible dog bowl as they are easy to pack and carry around. Some also come with a hook that you can easily attach to your bag. In addition, you could also carry a few treats for your dog as it’s a great training tool for good behavior.
A dog camping bed
After a long day of fun and activities, your dog also needs to get some rest, not to mention that it should be a comfortable spot too. Your dogβs bed should be easy to clean, water resistant, can easily roll up and lightweight. A camping bed will definitely keep them warm and off the ground. Luckily, there are a variety these available in the market that you can choose from.
An I.D tag
It is super important that your dog has a collar or harness with a set of I.D tags and contact information. In the case where your dog runs off and gets lost, they can be easily traced back to you. Some owners also keep a copy of their vaccine records in their pack just to be extra cautious.
Clothing and a backpack
As you explore around the woods with your dog, there is a lot of wear and tear on your dog’s feet hence why getting a pair of doggy boots would be ideal. Also if youβll be camping in hot places make sure to bring a cooling vest or if it’s going to rain you could carry a rain jacket and something to keep them warm as well. If you would like your dog to carry some items with them as you go hiking, you could get them a doggy backpack. Ensure it’s a comfortable fit for your dog.
