Check your vehicle
If you’re heading out on a trip by yourself, it’s super important to check that your vehicle is in good condition because you’re probably going to be doing a bit of driving! It might sound like common sense, but you would be surprised how many people skip this step or just don’t even think about it at all!
The simplest way to check that your car is in tip top shape is to take it for a service at least two weeks before you go. This gives your mechanic the opportunity to check over the simple things that can go wrong on a driving trip, and enough time to fix any problems that may pop up. You may need to make replacements or upgrades like new tires, roof racks and a tow bar for a camping trailer. Make sure to budget accordingly for the extra vehicle accessories you may need.
If you’re planning on a longer camping trip to South East Queensland, it’s worth thinking about whether it’s worth packing spare parts – and knowing how to replace them too! This applies to important features on the car such as the tyres and the oil.
Top tip! Make sure your air-conditioner is working properly if you’re heading away during summer. There is nothing worse than driving in a hot car!!
Plan ahead for extended Camping trips around Australia
As well as ensuring you’ve packed everything on your camping checklist, it’s super important to be mentally prepared for your solo trip. It is a very different experience to be out in the Australian bush by yourself than you might be used to, so it’s worth packing some activities to keep yourself busy.
Listening to podcasts or having a good playlist are great for while you’re driving is a great way to pass your time in the car and makes for great background noise while you’re enjoying the scenery. We also suggest bringing a camera to take photos of the beautiful scenery so that you can show your family and friends when you get back home.
The beauty of a solo camping trip is that you can spend your days doing exactly what you want to do, when you want to do it. Whether it’s your mountain bike and stand-up paddle board or bird watching binoculars, be prepared by packing all the essentials you need for your favourite activities.
Travel light
It’s easier said than done, but we can’t understate the importance of packing light when you’re travelling solo! While your 10-man tent and complete kitchen set up may be great when you’re away with a big group, it can be a bit difficult to set-up, keep clean and pack down when you’re by yourself. The truth is, you probably won’t need all that stuff when you’re away just by yourself too!
We suggest making a list of all the absolute essentials that you’ll need to get by on your trip, before you start actually packing. That way you can work out how much space you’ve got and where you can cut back too.
It’s a great idea to plan out your meals so that you’ve got just enough food for yourself – with a bit extra for an emergency and snacks of course!! Try to avoid over-packing on items that won’t last if you don’t get to them in time, such as fresh fruit and vegetables or food with an expiration date.
You could also consider travelling in a small campervan for your solo trip. Having everything you need in a ready-to-go van makes your life a total breeze and cuts down on set up and pack down time too. If you don’t already own a van, there are plenty of places nearby that you can hire one for a night, a weekend or even longer. For campers heading out to Murphy’s Creek Escape, we suggest looking into hire companies in Brisbane and Toowoomba as both locations are close to our site and easy to access.
